GrimFest is a fringe festival in London celebrating everything spooky and grim on stage! This covers a range of shows from drama to cabaret to stand-up and beyond! The festival will be taking place at Islington's Old Red Lion theatre during the spookiest month of the year, October!
If you love creating dark, twisted, macabre stories for the stage, then GrimFest is for you! We're looking for the best, original takes on the horror genre, whether it's blood-curdling and gore infested or deeply psychological and chilling we want to hear about it!
GrimFest 2024 will take place between 1st - 31st October at the wonderfully atmospheric Old Red Lion Theatre in Angel, Islington. Tickets for all shows taking place in the festival can be purchased on the Old Red Lion website here
Jack (he/him) is a performer, playwright & producer who founded Medium Rare Productions in 2019. His many lives include him being an award-winning sketch comedian, a writer of murder mysteries & even a Shakespearean tour guide. He is also the co-creator of the parody podcast 'One From The Vaults' with the Sinema Society; exploring the "lost" horror movies from Anvil Studios.
Nina (she/her) is a playwright, producer and actor, working and living in London. She founded Pither Productions in 2022, and is thrilled to be producing GrimFest with Jack after taking part in the festival in its first year with her award-winning play 'The Drought'. She studied Film & Media at Brighton University and attended Identity School of Acting.
Jack is a big fan of the camp classics of British horror cinema, paying homage to them at every turn whilst creating genuine terror on stage. For him, there is nothing quite so visceral or delicious as a live audience, a dark theatre and a truly blood-curdling scare.
Nina believes horror is a hugely under-represented genre in theatre, and would love to see more unconventional horror stories on stage. She is keen to see more horror from the female perspective, and her favourites are usually chilling psychological horrors with oodles of atmosphere!
"Grimfest for me was a great opportunity to try out writing and creating a horror show, which I had never done before. The fact that the show was a part of a festival specifically dedicated to all things spooky, made the whole creative process less stressful and more exciting. Jack and Nina were fabulous! They helped us every step of the way before and throughout the shows and we never felt like we were left to our own devices. The venue was just perfect for the festival - not only does it already feel a bit haunted, but also its unique layout gives a lot of possibilities and interesting solutions for theatre makers and actors!"
- Laima Vanaga (Legend of the Turnipman)
"We could have spend hours writing a whole thesis on our praise of you but hope these lines will suffice. We had the pleasure of performing in GrimFest 2022 and providing filming services in 2023 and on both occasions we have hand a stand-out experience. This may be a small and new festival but it is one beyond the horizon and one to keeping an eye on as it grows over the years. The “horror” niche is a wonderfully creative challenge to create something within a broad focus (does all horror related media need to be scary?) and offers a great opportunity to try new work, meet new creatives with a similar passion and be part of a new theatrical experience. The team behind the festival are otherworldly. Their communication, understanding and sense of community are impeccable and truly understand the highs and lows that can come with producing a theatre show. Totally approachable and a pleasure to work with.
- Liam Alexandru (Shipwreck Productions)
"GrimFest was a lovely experience. Not only was there a sense of camaraderie among the participants, but I felt very much supported by the organisers. Jack even personally helped with tech issues on the day of my show! I’d gladly do this fest again."
- Polis Loizou (I Was a Teenage Bisexual)
"Performing at Grimfest was a brilliant opportunity to share my work in a supportive, professional and atmospheric environment. The producers are super organised and lovely to work with, and the Old Red Lion's reputation as a creative hub is supported by its spacious performance area and unique church pew-like seating. If you need a stage for the Gothic, spooky or weird, this is the place to be!"
